THE VILLAGE Allendale was named the 2007 all-England winner of the Calor 'Village of The Year' competition.

Set around a large village square, the historic heart of the village sits on high ground above the River Allen.

SHOPPING, GALLERIES & GIFTS - you need travel no further than the local Co-op store (150m away) for groceries, wines and locally baked bread, whilst the Post Office and Gift Shop offer local gifts.

The village is also a hub for local artists - check out the Pebbles Gallery and forthcoming Allendale Creative Art Centre.

WALKING - Allendale has something for walkers of all inclinations! From a mile-long stroll along the river, to half-day hikes across the fell.

A growing set of A4 walking guides, of various lengths, can be downloaded and are provided for your stay. Points of historial interest are included.

The Isaac Tea Trail

GOLF & PONY TREKKING - Allendale Golf Club provides a 'taste of golf heaven' with its 9-hole round and stunning views across the dale. It may be a short course but the gradient comes into play on virtually every hole. The international course at Slaley is 20 mins drive.

Sinderhope Trekking Centre (01434 685266) offers local rides.

CYCLING - With a network of quiet country roads and a variety of off-road byways, Allendale is popular spot for cyclists. Ingleby has a lockable cycle shed for storage during your stay.

HEXHAM - The nearby market town of Hexham boasts an historic abbey and variety of shops and services.

Hexham is 10miles, or 15mins away by car. Bus services run several times daily to Allenheads, Hexham and Haydon Bridge from the village square (50m away).

The cultural sights, sounds and experiences of Newcastle and its revitalised Quayside are all within 35 mins reach along the A69.

BEYOND THE ALLEN VALLEY - This part of Northumberland is Hadrians Wall country. See the remains at Vindolanda or walk the wall at Housesteads (both a half hour rural drive from Allendale).

You can go underground and find silver and lead ore at Killhope or visit Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre.

Take a steam train ride on the South Tyne Railway at nearby Alston, just half an hour's drive away.
